I was watching Blacklist the other day and, much like all of you, I almost fell over when I heard Aram, the FBI tech guy, mention crypto!
It’s great to see crypto getting some love in the media because it brings awareness and more normies get interested and do Google research. And you know some of those searches will lead to bitcoin buys.
So I wanted to see just how much exposure bitcoin has in popular shows and movies, and here’s what I found:
1. The Blacklist – “The Good Samaritan”
Let’s start with the show I watched, “The Blacklist.” The antihero Reddington forces Aram at gunpoint to transfer millions of dollars untraceably from one bank account to another. And he uses Ripple, eCash, and bitcoin!
This episode aired in 2014, and I’m not really sure it was possible then to go from fiat to XRP. But it’s actually really crypto-deep. You’d think the script would just go, yeah I used the deep web to buy bitcoin with your bank funds, then converted it back to fiat and transferred it into the new account. But they involved multiple coins, good on them!
2. Jeopardy! – Episode 6729
They ask this question in Jeopardy! and the answer is BTC ^_^
3. The Simpsons – Season 25, Episode 7 and Season 26, Episode 1
In the 7th episode of the 25th season, Krusty tells Lisa that he’s broke because he got justed by bitcoin (how that’s possible, I don’t even know). I guess he bought BTC high, sold it low. Classic Krusty.
There’s also a passing billboard in the first episode of season 26 with a bitcoin meme you’ve probably seen:
4. House of Cards – “Chapter 15”
In House of Cards, “Chapter 15” some stereotypical computer guy mentions bitcoin when he tries to explain stuff that happens on the deep web. It’s sad, just bad publicity. Why would anyone want to buy bitcoin if it’s just associated with criminal activities? Bitcoin is about decentralization and freeing yourself from the control of big banks.
5. Parks and Recreation, “New Slogan”
I found this on Netflix, and it triggered me. But, I guess that’s because today PayPal’s banned crypto. Maybe back then PayPal didn’t care and people actually used PayPal to buy BTC. Anyway, her response was actually appropriate:
6. Family Guy – “The Peanut Butter Kid”
In an episode of Family Guy called “The Peanut Butter Kid,” there’s some pretty good bitcoin advertising :D. Louis complains about their centralized fiat bank not really growing their money. So she sets up the BTC ad by proclaiming they need to find a better way to keep their money. Peter yells “BITCOIN!” Good stuff.
7. Portlandia – Season 4, Episode 5
Lol! This scene is kind of awesome because it’s true :D. People who are into bitcoin always talk about it. I don’t mind when people talk about crypto because I like to talk about it too. But I’ve heard some people get really annoyed.
8. Person of Interest – “4C”
Welp, yet more bad press for bitcoin. In Person of Interest’s episode, “4C,” they use bitcoin in the stereotypical way – to pay for illegal goods on a deep web site.
9. Mr. Robot – Season 2, Episode 11
This was such a satisfying clip to watch lol! It looks like bitcoin takes a more central role in the plot of this particular episode. Politicians are worried that digital currencies are starting to overrun the world, but that it’s also manipulated (DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?). So they want to create their own digital currency so they can regulate it and “see into every open wallet.” 😀
10. Archer – “Baby Shower”
In Archer, Krieger starts running an “online pharmacy” where he sells cocaine on the deep web. Malory asks him how they’re going to get paid, and his answer is crypto :D. Although this is another bitcoin mention that’s in a negative light, it’s actually not so bad because it’s on an action-comedy show. So people will think it’s cool and normies might get interested and look bitcoin up.
Hopefully bitcoin and other crypto get mentioned in more and more shows and movies :D. Entertainment is more influential than the news, so if people get crypto-brainwashed, we’ll see some green candles!
